Fire is a beast that wants to consume you and everything in its path. Open a window or the door, stand up, or make a wrong turn and find yourself out of air and burning alive. Issue the proper commands, use the right tools, and tame the beast; hopefully, you and everyone gets out alive.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were approximately 1,160,450 local firefighters in the U.S. in 2015 (source: http://www.nfpa.org/news-and-research/fire-statistics-and-reports/fire-statistics/the-fire-service/administration/us-fire-department-profile) Of that total, 30% were career and 70% were volunteers.
Firefighters are the first line of defense in aiding their communities when it comes to fire. In 2015 there were 1,345,500 fires reported that resulted in the death of 3,280 civilians, injuries to 15,700 civilians, and $14.3 billion in property damage (source: http://www.nfpa.org/news-and-research/fire-statistics-and-reports/fire-statistics/fires-in-the-us).
